AFUERA AL AIRE is a radio residency proposed by Maritza Sánchez for Los límites de afuera, in which the artist offers herself as a medium to connect times, spaces and works through a series of radio actions carried out in the days leading up to the exhibition’s opening at Beta–Local. These actions inhabit the radio and digital spectrum, and can be heard on-site via FM radio and online at radiolibre.xyz.
This interdimensional radio station unfolds actions that link pasts, presents and futures, establishing a dialogue with the beyond: memories, divinations, and signals from outer space. First, there are sonic drifts through the Río Piedras district, where the artist traces connections to Puerto Rico’s memory through conversations with residents. Then, a collective hunt for inside and outside sounds, developed with Tony Cruz in his off-site sculpture Si por mí llueve in Vega Alta. After that, a table of invocation connects those present with voices from the beyond in a participatory radio action inspired by Hyakumonogatari kaidankai, a traditional Japanese storytelling game. Finally, the listening session of Disco solar — created by Ser del Cosmos and María Isabel Rueda as part of the exhibition — is broadcast. The spoken word, noises, music and silences transmitted over these days take shape in a subtle installation that distills what took place in each moment and invites visitors to enter a map of the unknown.
